Intel has a new ambition: autonomous robots.
What’s happening:
- Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) has officially spun out RealSense as an independent company and raised $50M USD in a new financing round
- The new funding round was led by Intel Capital and MediaTek Innovation Fund
Why it matters:
- This is the first time ever that Intel has spun out a company that is solely focused on robotics technology
Going deeper:
- RealSense has developed a leading edge 3D depth camera that provides real time depth perception for robots, drones and autonomous machines to be able to understand dynamic environments in 3D
- Multiple large robotics companies have existing contracts with RealSense, including Unitree Robotics and ANYbotics
The intrigue:
- Intel has publicly stated that RealSense’s 3D camera are currently installed in 60% of all the autonomous mobile robots and humanoid robots in the entire world
