The United States of America is betting big on nuclear energy. And they’re leveraging highly ambitious new federal policy changes to do it.
What’s happening:
- United States President Donald Trump has just signed four new executive orders focused on accelerating nuclear power infrastructure in America
Why it matters:
- The new executive orders are widely considered to be the most ambitious regulatory reforms ever for both building out nuclear power infrastructure as well as scaling up domestic uranium mining in America
Going deeper:
- The four new executive orders signed by President Donald Trump are largely focused around reducing the amount of time it takes to win approvals for nuclear reactor licenses from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and reducing the need for lengthy environmental reviews for new nuclear power plants to be built
- The new executive orders also allow nuclear reactors and small modular reactors to be built on federal land and even bypass some of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s procedures for review
The intrigue:
- The White House’s new executive orders are also accelerating the regulatory process for developing new uranium mines in the United States of America and may even leverage the Defense Production Act to help finance uranium mining and production for national security purposes
