Mentioned:
One of the leaders in isotope enrichment technology is buying a helium gas producer in South Africa. But, why?
What’s happening:
- ASP Isotopes (NASDAQ: ASPI) has entered into an agreement to acquire South African helium producer Renergen
Why it matters:
- Renergen has one of the most promising helium gas projects in the world known as the Virginia Gas Project that contains helium concentrations that are more than ten times the average helium deposit globally
Going deeper:
- The United States Development Finance Corporation previously committed $750M USD in debt financing to Renergen to advance their helium production in South Africa
- The new deal between ASP Isotopes and Renergen could dramatically lower the cost of isotope enrichment, largely due to the fact helium itself has valuable isotopes such as helium-3 and helium-4 as well as being used as an enabler for multiple types of critical isotopes
The intrigue:
- ASP Isotopes has publicly stated they will pursue a listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange upon the successful closing of the acquisition
The fine print:
- Renergen is a publicly traded company in South Africa and the acquisition will still ultimately require approval of shareholders before it is able to officially close
