Brian Armstrong built one of the most important companies in the history of crypto. And now, he’s coming after longevity science next.
What’s happening:
- Biotechnology startup NewLimit has raised $130M USD in a new Series B financing round
- The new funding round was led by Kleiner Perkins and include notable participation from Founders Fund, Dimension Capital and angel investors Daniel Gross and Nat Friedman
Why it matters:
- NewLimit was co-founded by Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) founder Brian Armstrong, former Google Ventures general partner Blake Byers and highly accomplished stem cell researcher Jacob Kimmel
Going deeper:
- NewLimit is focused on developing new therapeutic breakthroughs in reprogramming human cells that are largely responsible for age related diseases
- NewLimit’s lead therapeutic program is a mRNA medicine that encodes specific transcription factors to liver cells that briefly activates genes that cause old cells to behave more similarly to young cells
- NewLimit is also building artificial intelligence models to both simulate thousands of possible new treatments for aging cells and explore tens of thousands of different transcriptions factors to determine which have the highest probability of rejuvenating old cells
The intrigue:
- NewLimit co-founder Blake Byers was also previously on the board of directors of publicly listed quantum computing company IonQ (NYSE: IONQ)
