Dubai is embracing a new type of technology: autonomous trucks.

What’s happening:

  • Autonomous trucking startup Einride has partnered with Jebel Ali Port in Dubai to build the world’s largest autonomous trucking network

The big idea:

  • The Jebel Ali Port located in Dubai will use Einride’s electric powered and fully autonomous trucks to move and transport shipping containers
  • Einride’s trucks operate entirely autonomously but are monitored by human beings for safety and precision
  • Einride leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to analyze patterns, identify the best routes available and lower total energy consumption

By the numbers:

  • Einride’s autonomous trucks successfully complete 99.7% of their attempted deliveries
  • Einride’s electric vehicles emit approximately 95% less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than gas powered vehicles
  • Einride is aiming to establish a 550 kilometre network across the UAE that will see their autonomous trucks operating in both contained shipping ports as well as on public roads

Going deeper:

  • Einride has multiple notable partnerships with some of the largest companies in the world, including Mars, Heineken and GE Appliances

The intrigue:

  • Einride’s trucks are built without a cabin, meaning it is impossible for them to be driven by a human being
