Mentioned:
Electric air taxis are officially coming to China. And it might just be the beginning of a new revolution for transportation.
What’s happening:
- EHang Holdings (NASDAQ: EH) has officially been granted China’s first ever approval for commercial operations of electric air taxis
Why it matters:
- The new approval from the Chinese government makes EHang Holdings the first company in the entire world to receive full regulatory certification and compliance for operating electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft
Going deeper:
- The new approval from the Civil Aviation Administration of China allows EHang Holdings to begin commercial operations and carry passengers on fully autonomous flights with no pilot on board
- EHang Holdings will begin rolling out flights on their fully electric, autonomous flagship electric air taxi EH216-S in Guangzhou and Hefei
The fine print:
- EHang Holdings will initially only be able to operate short distance flights on predefined routes for sightseeing until there is further regulatory clarity on using electric air taxis for urban transportation and commuting purposes within China
