One of the most exciting brain-computer interface companies in the world has raised a new mega funding round.
What’s happening:
- Elon Musk’s Neuralink has raised $600M USD in a new financing round
- The funding round was led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and also included notable participation from Google Ventures and Vy Capital
By the numbers:
- The new capital raise values Neuralink at more than $9B USD
Why it matters:
- This is the single largest financing round that Neuralink has ever completed since inception of the company
Going deeper:
- Neuralink has been rapidly advancing their brain-computer interface technology through the regulatory process, including just recently receiving a Breakthrough Device designation from the United States Food and Drug Administration for its ability to potentially restore speech in individuals who have severe speech impairments
- The new capital will largely go towards accelerating Neuralink’s clinical trials, including their PRIME Study which is aiming to validate the effectiveness of their fully implantable, wireless brain-computer interface in individuals with paralysis either from spinal cord injuries or neurological diseases such as ALS
