Micron is getting serious about domestic semiconductor manufacturing. And they’re putting up billions to do it.

What’s happening:

  • Micron (NASDAQ: MU) has publicly stated they are committing to invest up to $3B USD into the semiconductor supply chain ecosystem in the United States of America

Why it matters:

  • This is one of the largest funding commitments Micron has ever made into their American based semiconductor supply chain ecosystem and is part of their efforts to secure a domestic supply of critical input materials for their memory fabrication facilities

Going deeper:

  • Micron will make a strategic investment of up to $500M USD into GlobalWafers to accelerate the build out of their 300mm silicon-wafer factory located in Sherman, Texas
  • GlobalWafers and Micron have also entered into a new 10 year supply deal as part of Micron’s investment in which GlobalWafers will provide Micron with significant long term raw silicon wafer capacity
