America wants to embrace nuclear power. And now, a publicly traded company has just won a new approval for their small modular reactor design.

What’s happening:

  • NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) has been granted new regulatory approval for the design of their new, larger small modular reactors from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission

By the numbers:

  • The new small modular reactors from NuScale Power are capable of producing 77 megawatts of electricity, which is a meaningful increase from NuScale Power’s previously approved design which was capable of generating 50 megawatts of electricity

Why it matters:

  • NuScale Power is currently the only company in the United States of America to win multiple design approvals for small modular reactors

Going deeper:

  • NuScale Power’s partner ENTRA1 Energy has the exclusive rights to distribute and deploy the newly approved small modular reactors and are aiming to cut large scale commercial deals within North America
  • Nuclear energy infrastructure in America has been making political waves lately, with President Donald Trump just recently signing four new executive orders focused on accelerating regulatory approvals for nuclear power projects as well as scaling up uranium mining

The fine print:

  • NuScale Power has publicly stated that they don’t expect to be able to install a large quantity of small modular reactors that are operating and producing electricity until the end of this decade
