There’s an artificial intelligence startup with a with a wildly ambitious vision: building brains for robots. And some of the biggest venture capital investors in the world are getting behind it.

What’s happening:

  • Physical Intelligence has raised $400M USD in a new funding round
  • The round was led by Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos, Thrive Capital and Lux Capital

The big idea:

  • Physical Intelligence is aiming to build a first of its kind generalist brain that can be installed into all different types of robotics and leverage artificial intelligence to make decisions, learn new behaviours and follow instructions
  • Through building out their own artificial intelligence model, Physical Intelligence is developing a full scale generalist model for physical movement in robots that will enable rapid learning and behaviour adaptation for specific environments or tasks that have unique variables

Why it matters:

  • While many startups are building advanced robotics technology for humanoid robots, building out a highly sophisticated artificial intelligence model will allow robots to perform more general tasks and be less limited to only being capable of repeating simple operations
