A startup in the United States of America is building modular data centres for powering high performance computing. And some of the biggest venture capital funds in the world are behind it.
What’s happening:
- Edge infrastructure company Armada has raised $131M USD in a strategic financing round
- The new funding round was led by Pinegrove and Glade Brook and also included notable participation from existing investors including Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and Lux Capital
Why it matters:
- Armada has developed a modular data centre known as Leviathan which is purpose built for megawatt scale and can be deployed in remote environments to power high performance computing
Going deeper:
- Armada’s technology is solely focused on edge computing and being able to power both training and inference for artificial intelligence at the edge, which has multiple different important applications for companies in defense and energy who may operate in difficult environments
- Armada has publicly stated they plan to begin deploying their Leviathan modular data centres throughout America, with planned installations in North Dakota, Texas, West Virginia and Louisiana
The intrigue:
- The United States Navy previously entered into a research and development collaboration with Armada focused on using their edge computing technology and hardware in challenging combat environments
