Small modular reactors have the potential to reshape the future of energy production. And now, the United States Army is preparing to deploy them on military bases.
What’s happening:
- The United States Army has launched a new initiative known as the Janus Program to build and deploy small modular reactors on domestic military bases
Why it matters:
- This is the largest commitment the United States Army has ever made to embracing small modular reactors to provide military bases with independent sources of reliable power
Going deeper:
- The United States Army has publicly stated they will enter into long term contracts with small modular reactor companies to deploy and operate small modular reactors
- The United States government has been making significant policy changes around nuclear energy lately, which has largely been fuelled by President Donald Trump signing four new executive orders to accelerate both nuclear power infrastructure and uranium mining within America
The fine print:
- The United States Army is not planning to deploy their first small modular reactor for at least three more years and has not yet disclosed when they will enter into their first deal with a small modular reactor company
