Psychedelic medicines are getting a big boost of support from the White House. And it might be just the beginning of reshaping the future of psychedelic drugs in America.
What’s happening:
- President Donald Trump has officially signed a new executive order known as Accelerating Medical Treatments for Serious Mental Illness focused on using psychedelic medicines for therapeutic treatments
Why it matters:
- The new executive order instructs the United States Food and Drug Administration to accelerate the review of psychedelic compounds such as ibogaine, psilocybin and MDMA that have shown significant clinical validation as a therapeutic treatment for both addiction and mental health issues
Going deeper:
- Both the United States Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Administration are instructed to develop a pathway for individuals to be able to access psychedelic drugs such as ibogaine under the existing Right To Try legal framework in America and other expanded access frameworks
- The new executive order also specifically instructs the Drug Enforcement Administration to prepare to reschedule the legal status of psychedelic medicines once they successfully complete Phase III clinical trials and win regulatory approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration
The intrigue:
- The Health and Human Services Secretary is also instructed to invest roughly $50M USD into research partnerships for psychedelic medicines for veterans as part of the new executive order
The fine print:
- The new executive order does not change the legal status of psychedelic medicines or enable individuals to use psychedelics for recreational purposes
