There’s a new type of fat coming to restaurants and grocery stores in America. And it’s made inside of bioreactors.

What’s happening:

  • Cultivated meat startup Mission Barns has officially earned approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration for their novel cultivated pork fat

How it works:

  • Mission Barns produces cultivated pork fat by growing belly fat cells from Yorkshire pigs in large scale bioreactors
  • Once the cultivated fat is produced, Mission Barns combines it with plant based protein sources to make meatballs and bacon

Why it matters:

  • This is the first ever regulatory approval for cultivated fat to be allowed to be sold and consumed in the United States of America

Going deeper:

  • Mission Barns is planning to initially roll out their cultivated fat into select restaurants in San Francisco as well as Sprouts Market
  • Multiple notable venture capital funds have previously invested into Mission Barns, including Cantos Ventures, Lever VC, Humboldt Fund and others
