About Bitcoin

Bitcoin (BTC) is the original cryptocurrency, introduced in 2008 in a whitepaper published under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The network operates as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, allowing users to send value across the internet without relying on banks, payment processors or other intermediaries.

Bitcoin runs on a public blockchain secured by a proof-of-work consensus mechanism. Miners compete to add new blocks of transactions to the chain by solving cryptographic puzzles, and are rewarded with newly issued BTC and transaction fees. The supply of bitcoin is capped at 21 million units, with the issuance rate reduced by half approximately every four years through an event known as the halving. This schedule gives bitcoin a predictable, disinflationary monetary policy.

The network supports layer-two solutions such as the Lightning Network, which enables faster and lower-cost payments by settling channels back to the base chain periodically. Within the broader landscape, Bitcoin functions as both a settlement network and a non-sovereign monetary asset, held across individuals, companies and, increasingly, sovereign and institutional entities as a store-of-value allocation alongside other reserve assets.

Why Bitcoin Matters

Bitcoin occupies a distinct position in the digital asset market as the first and most widely held cryptocurrency, with a fixed supply schedule and the largest mining and node network of any blockchain. Its role as a treasury asset has expanded into corporate balance sheets and exchange-traded products. Readers tracking these flows can explore broader trends among bitcoin holders.
