About Worldcoin
Worldcoin (WLD) is the native token of the World project, a network that combines a privacy-preserving digital identity system with a distribution mechanism for the WLD token. The project's stated goal is to provide a way to verify that a user is a unique human online without revealing personal information, addressing identity challenges that grow as automated systems become more capable.
World uses a custom hardware device, the Orb, to generate an iris-derived cryptographic identifier known as a World ID. The Orb captures biometric data locally and converts it into a unique hash, with the underlying biometric input deleted by default. World ID can then be used by applications to confirm personhood without exposing any biometric or identifying data.
The ecosystem also includes World App, a self-custody wallet for managing WLD and other assets, and World Chain, a Layer 2 network designed to give human-verified users priority block space and lower fees. Within the broader landscape, the project occupies a niche at the intersection of identity, biometrics, payments and AI, where verifying real-user activity is becoming a structural concern.
Why Worldcoin Matters
Proof-of-personhood and decentralised identity projects address an increasingly relevant problem: distinguishing real users from automated agents in online systems and applications. Worldcoin sits within this category, combining biometric verification through dedicated hardware with a token-based incentive network. Readers tracking how identity primitives interact with payments, governance and AI can explore broader trends across crypto and Web3.
